Hello statement blazer. Earlier this spring I discussed wanting a cut away blazer for the Fall and I think this blazer might be exactly what I’ve been waiting for. While it will not replace my desire for a cape coat, it is something I can wear on heavy rotation for work, and dressed down on Fridays or on the weekend with a cute denim skirt. Extra points for being preppy and the perfect shade of grey! Gold stars to Club Monaco for revisiting the classics for Fall.

Two years ago I bought the most beautiful blush pink elbow length calf-skin leather gloves and I have yet to wear them because I don’t have a cape. I’ve been looking for a cape coat with a traditional bell sleeve, a belted waist, and in a colour other than black. Paul and Joe released the most beautiful cape for fall that meets all my requirements, except the price. Anthropologie has also released a version for fall that is very similar and very affordable. The P&J version is a bit more refined and classically chic, however the collar on the Anthropologie jacket is to die for. Should I save or splurge?

I start my first sewing class tonite and I couldn't be more excited and nervous all at the same time. I can already sew the small things like pillows and aprons, but a few professional lessons can never hurt. I'm starting small but I'm hoping that by Christmas I'll be able to follow a basic pattern and sew a few cute pieces for next summer.

Seems I'm not the only one trading my sky-high stilettos for flats. Anna Wintour was recently spotted wearing flats at the Hampton Designer Showcase. The Huffington Post reports;

"each of Anna's sartorial decisions are deliberate as she decides which trends to promote. And she could be pushing Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley's agenda, as last month he declared the high, high heel to be over. Talley called stilettos "towering torture chambers" and said designers need a "reality check." In fact, Talley might be favoring a new style icon, in particular: Can't anyone take a cue from First Lady Michelle Obama, in the elegant low-heeled shoes she always wears? A flat would be nice. Talley confessed his confusion over why women choose to wear such painful shoes. He pointed to Diana Vreeland, Katharine Hepburn and C.Z. Guest as women who owned all of the grace in the world and lacked any precarious pairs of heels. He ended with an appeal to today's couture cobblers: Can you stop the madness and dream up a new way to define your silhouette without a needle heel

Comforts of Home

Spaetzle is a dish of tiny noodles similar to Gnocchi or dumplings that originates from Europe. You can buy spaetzle in the pasta aisle of your local gourmet grocery store, or you can follow my directions below and make your own.

Spaetzle
475g (1 tub) light ricotta cheese
3 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
2 cups all-purpose flour

Sauce
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 can Heinz Maple Beans
1 can Campbells condensed tomato soup
Chicken Broth
Basil

Sauce - Brown beef in pan. Add beans, tomato soup and a generous amount of basil. Stir. When mixture starts to bubble, add chicken broth until mixture reaches desired consistency (we like our sauce thick, but you may prefer the sauce to be thinner).
Pasta - Boil a large pot of salted water. In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the flour. Blend well, then slowly stir in the flour until the mixture becomes a stiff batter. Using a flat metal grater (or colander) with large holes, fill with ¼ of batter and hold over the pot. With a metal spatula, press small amounts of the batter through the holes directly into the water [the dough will be thick but the steam from the pot helps to thin the noodle as it falls through the holes]. As the spaetzle gradually rise to the surface of the boiling water, use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a colander. Add spaetzle to sauce and serve.
Yield: 8 * 1 cup servings. 367 cal, 9g fat, 4g fibre per serving.

After a few days of solid deliberation, I splurged on these cuties. I’m in the process of replacing all of my favourite sky-high heels with more sensible options and it’s been really tough because a) I love my heels and b) I’m incredibly picky when it comes to shoes. I chose these because they are patent, they have a solid rubber sole, and the patent & gold bow adds a touch of whimsy to an otherwise boring shoe. My wallet is looking emptier, but my hip is much happier!

I’m sitting at my desk working away and Disturbia by Rhianna starts playing in the background. At first I thought it was my neighbour’s cell-phone, but the song just keeps playing – 3 times to be exact. My neighbour is singing along in her office, I’m starting to go mental, and for some reason it seems to be getting louder. As I stand up to go check things out I realize that Rhianna is coming from MY office – I left my iPod on my desk and must have accidentally turned it on. D’oh! It’s going to be one of those days.

I spotted this over at ApartmentTherapy this afternoon and couldn’t resist sharing.

“For Rob Walker and Joshua Glenn’s latest project, Significant Objects, they find inexpensive collectibles at thrift stores and garage sales and match them with writers who write a fictional story about each object. The item and the story are then posted on eBay for anyone to bid on, sometimes fetching 10 times what was originally paid… The story about the spotted dogs above by Curtis Sittenfeld actually made our heart skip a beat”

The part of the story about Larry and Bernadette reminds me of myself and the Dr – minus 40 years, alfalfa sprout pantyhose and said hefty-ness. We are those people who hold hands when we walk down the street, kiss goodbye in the elevator every morning, and can’t wait to see each other at the end of the day. I like to believe that 40 years down the road, like Larry and Bernadette, we will still be as smitten as the day we met.

Kitty's first Prada shoes

On Friday the Dr surprised me with these gorgeous Prada shoes and I haven’t taken them off since!

Here’s the story about how they came to be. Friday afternoon we were browsing through the shop and I spotted them. They were absolutely perfect, they fit like a dream, but they were out of my price range. I didn’t have long to mew about them because the Dr had to go back to work, and I was desperately in need of coffee. {lapse one hour and one cup of coffee} As we were driving home, the Dr (playing it all smooth) asked me to get his phone out of his bag. After a teensy bit of playful grumbling about having to reach down for it, I opened the bag and there were the shoes! It turns out he had waited until we were apart just long enough that I wouldn't see him run back to the store to get them before anyone else had the chance to buy the very last size 36.5.

The shoes are absolutely perfect, but it is the gesture that makes me swoon. Prada shoes or no Prada shoes, I feel like the luckiest lady ever.

Sometimes I need to remember to shop my closet(s). A week ago I was having a wardrobe dilemma and I almost bought a pair of Jimmy Choo's that I didn’t love just so I could be sure I wouldn’t go barefoot to the wedding. That was before I remembered I had these gold lovelies tucked away in the back of my closet [Kate Spade - circa 2007]. They are the perfect height to dance the night away. I ♥ reusing/repurposing!

Today we are celebrating Canada's 142 birthday. July 1 marks the day that Canada became a confederation under the British North America Act, which came into force on July 1, 1867. The Dr and I are spending our day with friends and family and just relaxing at home. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate.

Dressing the Man

As Reachel so eloquently stated "One cannot fashion an empire without outfitting all its constituents, especially one's partner in power." After a recent shopping trip with the Dr, it didn't take me long to assess what works and what doesn't work when dressing your man for summer. Here are a few of my tips -

1. Khakis & Linen - done properly these can be your man's best friend. I prefer the wrinkle resistant variety [less work for me - better look for him]. To ensure a crisp appearance, make sure they break properly and fit snuggly in the hip/thigh/butt region. Avoid all regular or relaxed cuts and opt instead for a slim fit. Dockers makes a fantastic wrinkle resistant khaki and I can confirm that after sitting/standing/walking for an entire day, the pants were wrinkle free!

2. Shirts - Please avoid the short sleeve dress shirt and tie look. All dress shirts, even summer versions, should have proper sleeves (men, you can roll them if necessary). In this case, the Dr chose Gingham for it's versatility. While it is commonly considered casual, when paired properly it can work as well in an office environment as it does left open on the weekends. To avoid the down-home country feel, ensure the gingham print is tiny and the collar / cuffs of the shirt are properly pressed.

3. The polo - Stay away from darks or neutrals. Choose a bright colour that brings out the colour of your man's eyes, or defines his dark features (the Dr. opted for pink - yay!). Again the fitted polo is versatile and works well for the office, the golf course and on weekends. Steer clear of anything baggy or too long, and opt for something slim through the trunk and bicep region.

4. Socks - Leave the sweat socks at home and choose something funky like Paul Smith or Duchamp. The right socks can add that extra punch to any outfit!

5. The ribbon belt - To avoid the frat-boy appearance, ensure the belt has a touch of leather on the buckle, the loop, and the ends - preferably brown.

6. Shoes - Brown Leather Driving Loafer. Enough said.

7. Accessorize - Aviators and proper brown leather sandals are classics and will last your man through many a summer season to come.

Where were you when you heard the news? The Dr and I were on our way to the mall when we heard it on the radio. At first we couldn't believe it [ it didn't help that the broadcaster didn't sound like she could believe it either] so we called a friend who verified that Michael Jackson was indeed gone. By the time we left the mall everyone was buzzing about it.

Love him or hate him, Michael Jackson was a tremendously talented individual who had a huge impact both in life, and now in death. Every radio station I tuned into today was playing one hit or another from his various albums. Every television station was celebrating his successes in one way or another because let's face it, Michael Jackson was music royalty. Personally I can't think of a better way to mourn the death and celebrate the life of such an iconic man than to pull out your favorite Michael Jackson record/cd/cassette/MP3 and spend the evening dancing away in your kitchen or living room with friends. May he rest in peace.

Why did I not think of this? When we moved into our home, we were blessed (cursed?) with gorgeous mahogany hard wood floors. Since noticing some scratches the first few weeks after moving in, I constantly find myself replacing the felt pads on the bottom of our chairs to avoid anymore dreaded scratches and dings. Since I just set up my sewing area last week, I think my first project might be a pair of chair socks. Please stop laughing.

Today my sweet sweet man is enjoying a much deserved mini-vacation with his friends at the cottage. To say I'm jealous is a mild understatement but I've decided to think of my time at home as a stay-cation. This morning I thrifted and enjoyed a nice hot coffee on the patio of a local cafe, spent some time downtown browsing the uber-chic and uber-expensive stores, ate lunch in a courtyard beside a beautiful old fountain, witnessed a man dressed up as a seal {adorable!} carrying a sign that said "Please don't club me", and tonite I'm going to curl up and watch some chick-flicks - like PS - I love you and Sex and The City without feeling even a teensy-bit guilty. Yay!

Personal Pet Peeve #1 - Televisions. So many homes that are featured in magazines and blogs lack modern amenities, like a television. We know you watch tv. Why try and hide it? I realize that a television isn't exactly a "stylish" accessory but it's a must {I like me some Fashion TV and What Not to Wear after a long day at the office.} Do you incorporate a television into your main space? Forgive me fashion gods, for I have sinned. I got really tired of paying my drycleaner a ridiculous amount of money every week to ruin my beautiful silk dresses. So last night, I... I... machine washed them {gasp!} myself -in a front loader on the delicate/handwash cycle. In other news... Looks like peanut butter DOES come out of silk. Booyah!

See people, I'm doing my part to save the earth by not having my delicates drycleaned in toxic chemicals and stored in horrible plastic bags. Good bye drycleaning, hello 50$ in my pocket.

p.s. - while I am confessing, I also washed my favorite blue coat and it turned out fine.
p.s.s - this is in no way an endorsement to forgo the drycleaner and wash your delicates.

Ever had one of those days when you leave the house wearing something really pretty only to get to work and realize you have a stain on your skirt? My friends, today is that day. I sure do hope peanut butter comes out of green silk, otherwise my gorgeous green Anthropologie dress (circa Summer 2008) will have to become a tunic. This will make for one sad cat. My grandma always said bad things happen in threes. First, we get broken into. Second, our brand new car was leaking coolant and needed a new water pump. Third, peanut butter on the dress? I guess it could have been worse!

I’m chuckling as I write this because a year ago I wouldn’t have been caught dead wearing Tory Burch*. There was just something about the collection that screamed “Look at me! I’m an upper-crust, middle-aged, SUV driving, latte drinking, bling wearing snob”. I guess I wasn’t the only one out there who felt this way because this season’s collection has a very new and fresh feel to it. Sure the caftans + white jeans + bohemian accents are still available, but there is also a dynamite selection of versatile pieces for all occasions. I love the colourful patterns, the vintage appeal, and all the layering that’s going on in the lookbook. Clearly this is a line that’s trying to market itself to the young professional. Are you buying? I am.

If you’re in the market for a dress I suggest checking out the Milia. It comes in two colour-ways (I prefer the blue) and is woven with a subtle gold metallic thread. The style is flattering for all body types (slightly empire) and the silk floats away from the body just perfectly. It’s a great transition piece – wear it to work (with a blazer) and then out for dinner with someone special, dressed up to a wedding where you want to dance your face off or dressed down with layers for pre-fall. The entire TB collection runs a tad-bit tiny, but I still wear my regular size. Also, just to clear up any misconceptions about length, I’m 5’5 and this dress hits at my knee.

p.s. – Anyone else think the model looks ridiculously similar to Shannon Elizabeth? What ever happened to her anyways???

* I own a dress and a tank from this SS 2009 collection and it’s only a matter of time before the Milia dress hits the sale rack (in blue!) and becomes mine.

I’d like to start this by apologizing to everyone who reads here on a regular basis. I know that the posts have been thin recently, and I’m sad to report they will probably continue to be thin for the next little while. My desire to look at pretty things has up and left since someone broke into our house earlier this week.

We have a lot to be thankful for; the dog was fine, there was no visible vandalism, most of our most personal effects stayed put, but at some point in time I lost my joie du vivre. I try so hard to always remember that there is good in everyone, but after being robbed, I’m finding it hard to smile, to be polite and not to suspect everyone I see on the street of stealing my security.

On top of it all, the thief (thieves?) stole my computer, and with it, all of my pictures and all of my favourite things. The police are doing their best and we’re happy with the measures and steps that have been taken so far, but I can’t help but to feel a little sorry for myself and wonder, why us? Of all the 20 houses on the street, why ours? The Dr. tells me everything happens for a reason and something good will come of this, but I’m having trouble believing this was in our plan.

Tonite I am planning to throw myself a small pity party and then start to pick up the pieces.

Little Red Wagon

When my brother and I were wee, my mother would pull us around our local garden centre/petting zoo/bird sanctuary/play centre in a red metal Radio Flyer wagon. I hadn’t thought about our adventures in the little red wagon for years until Saturday, as we were walking around our neighbourhood community street sale and we spotted the exact same Red Radio flyer wagon for sale. We bought it immediately and despite the fact that people could hear us coming for a mile, I couldn’t have been prouder of our purchase. For the time being we’re using it as a plant stand in our backyard, but I can just imagine the adventures we will have with it in the future.

Oh Canadiana - Solair Chair

On our way home last night, we rescued this abandoned 70’s era aquamarine Solair Chair. The chair was designed by Fabiano and Panzini in 1970, manufactured by IPL in St-Damien Quebec, and was available for purchase through the Eaton’s catalogue in Canada. We noticed when we got it home that the plastic is broken on one part of the seat so we’re trying to come up with DIY repair solution vs. buying a new seat. I toyed with the idea of sewing a seat cushion from oilcloth, but the best option we have come up with so far is to weave nylon cord through the seat to create stability and give it an interesting detail.

“The Solair also provides the template for the fruitful domestic-foreign partnerships that recurred throughout the decade, and that de Winter’s MOMA piece epitomizes. It’s the first instance I can find of foreign designers being attracted to and producing work for Canadian manufacturers, and it’s an extremely inventive piece. The seat plastic pops out and the frame is readily stacked for storage and shipping purposes. Tea Time

Combining my love for vintage and linens, in November I started collecting vintage linen tea towels. They are both functional and beautiful at the same time, and my friends always comment on how lovely they look. My favourite one so far is turquoise and red, and the print is a recipe for apple pie. I reserve it mostly for when company comes over as a decoration for the oven, but after seeing this article in the June edition of House and Home, I think I might frame it as an instant piece of vintage chic art.

Sewing Station

Since signing up for sewing lessons, I've been thinking about creating an appropriate space for my new craft. I need a small station that I can incorporate into my second bedroom and I want something beautiful that transitions easily when company arrives. When I found this picture I had one of those "aha" moments. This idea is brilliant for my small space; the work surfaces tuck away like a nice set of nesting tables making them functional and classic at the same time. Ideally I would like a chair but in this case the ottoman fits the feel of the station better and I am imagining it opens up to reveal storage for materials and notions. My patterns could hang on the wall along with photos for inspiration and serve as a rotating display for guests. How do you indulge your hobbies without letting them take over your entire home?

Theory Pixel Flower

It's sale time at my favorite retailer and lucky for me, I had an inside scoop. I'd been oogling this top from Theory since it arrived in February and I snagged the last one left in my size. I wore it on Saturday, and again on Sunday and I couldn't be happier with how it has integrated itself into my closet. Normally I'm not a huge fan of Theory, but this one is a keeper! For those of you who are interested, the pattern also comes in a tank and a dress.

It's Victoria Day in Canada and what an absolutely lovely day it was. Today we cleaned the garage, looked at a few homes we'd love to live in, did some work around the garden and went to the movies to see Angels and Demons. The movie seems to be getting mixed reviews but both the Dr. and I thought it was fantastic.

Yesterday our beloved dog turned 4. We celebrated with BBQ, beer and ice cream cake, and yes, he had a wee bit of cake. Before anyone comments and tells me dairy is not recommended for dogs, I will just say you've never met this dog. He has a history of pouting and acting out if he doesn't get what he wants, and he really wanted some cake. This picture was taken when he was still just 3 but it makes me smile everytime!
